Match Boxes

A custom matchbox is more than just a holder for matches—it’s a physical piece of your brand that sits on tables, counters, and bar tops long after the customer leaves. Built with a sturdy sleeve-and-tray structure, these boxes feature clear printing on every side, including the inner drawer. We supply them empty so you can pack your own matches without dealing with costly hazmat shipping fees or carrier delays. Available in standard pocket and fireplace sizes with minimum orders starting at 50

Custom Printed Match Boxes for Brands & Events

Small box. Big impression. Every strike tells your story.

Match boxes are rigid sleeve-and-tray boxes printed with your brand and shipped empty, ready for you to fill with your own matches. A compact, tactile keepsake that sits on tables, bars, and countertops — putting your name in someone’s hand every single time they need a flame.

From a sleek hotel lobby to a backyard wedding, these little boxes carry weight far beyond their size. Browse our Custom Packaging Boxes to see where match boxes fit within your full packaging line.

Branded Matchboxes Built for Your Business

Custom match boxes do something that digital marketing simply cannot — they live in physical spaces and get picked up, used, and remembered. Whether you run a boutique hotel, a cocktail bar, or a candle brand, a printed matchbox doubles as décor, a conversation piece, and a brand touchpoint rolled into one.

Collectors have been saving branded matchboxes for generations — a hobby known as phillumeny — which means your investment often outlasts the last match in the box.

Printed Empty — You Do the Filling

Sire Printing supplies empty match boxes only. The printed sleeve and tray arrive flat-packed or pre-assembled, ready for your matches.

This matters more than most buyers realize. Filled boxes containing safety matches fall under DOT regulation 49 CFR 173.186(c), which means they ship under hazmat rules — adding cost and carrier restrictions.

Empty printed boxes ship like standard packaging, keeping your landed cost low and your lead time short. It is also why some suppliers ship international orders without matches inside.

Before you fill, run through this checklist:

  • ✅ Measure your match stick length and confirm it fits the tray depth with a little clearance
  • ✅ Check whether your filler applies the striker strip, or order pre-striped sleeves
  • ✅ Work the required phrase “For safety, store in a cool, dry place” (per 16 CFR § 1202.6) into your artwork if your product needs US compliance labeling
  • ✅ Order a physical sample and test the fit before your full run

Inside the Box: Sleeve, Tray & Striker Edge

Understanding how a matchbox is built helps you design it right.

The Outer Sleeve

The sleeve is the wrapper the world sees. It slides over the tray and gives you four printable sides — front, back, and both ends — plus the top and bottom panels. This is your primary canvas.

The Sliding Tray

The tray is the inner drawer that holds your matches. The inside face of the tray can be printed with a hidden message, a pattern, or a secondary brand element — a detail that surprises customers when they slide it open. This is the same Sleeve & Tray Box structure used across premium rigid packaging.

The Strike Side

The striker strip sits on one or both side edges of the sleeve. Keep all decorative artwork pulled back from that edge — foil or ink on the strike surface ruins the functionality and the finish.

Matchbox or Matchbook?

A matchbox is a rigid drawer-style box with a sliding tray. A matchbook is a folded paper cover with tear-out paper matches. Sire Printing produces the rigid sleeve-and-tray matchbox format.

Sizes & Dimensions

Match boxes come in several standard footprints. The right size depends on the match length you plan to use — always size the tray from the stick length, adding a few millimeters of clearance.

Built to your match

The standard pocket size holds roughly 20 wooden matchsticks and prints in full color on all four sides. Long matches — around 3.75" — suit fireplaces and pillar candles and need the larger fireplace size. If none of the standards fit your product, we build a custom dieline from your match length up.

Board Stock That Holds Its Shape

Match box packaging needs to be firm enough to survive a pocket or a purse without crushing. We work with SBS paperboard for crisp printing, kraft board for a natural or eco look, and rigid chipboard for premium gift-quality keepsakes. Bulk orders ships in corrugated outer cartons to protect the print during transit.

Recycled & FSC Options

If sustainability is part of your brand story, we offer FSC-certified board and post-consumer recycled stock in most sizes. The print quality on recycled kraft stock has a textured, craft feel that works particularly well for candle and wellness brands.

Printing & Finishes for a Small Canvas

Custom printed matchboxes reward strong, simple artwork. The sleeve is small — a standard pocket box is just over two inches wide — and fine detail disappears fast.

We print in CMYK and PMS spot colors, with offset lithography for large runs and digital printing for shorter quantities. Available finishes:

Foil Stamping

Logos, wedding dates, premium branding

Embossing / Debossing

Tactile brand marks

Soft-Touch Laminate

Luxury feel, matte look

Spot UV

Selective gloss on a matte base

Matte or Gloss Laminate

💡 Design Tip from Our Team
Text below 6pt disappears on a 2-inch sleeve — even on a proof. Keep your logo bold, your font weight medium or heavier, and leave breathing room around the striker edge.

We see the most artwork revisions on matchboxes than on almost any other product, purely because of the small canvas. Send us your file before you finalize it and we will flag anything that won’t hold.

Personalized match boxes — printed with a name, a wedding date, or a short line of text — need even more care with font size. Script fonts that look elegant on a 5×7 card can become illegible on a matchbox sleeve. Our design team works through the dieline with you before production begins.

From Quote to Delivery

Ordering custom match boxes wholesale is straightforward from start to finish:

  1. Request a quote — share your size, quantity, and any artwork you have

  4. Production — standard turnaround confirmed at quote stage
