When you see “child-resistant marijuana packaging,” it typically means the full package system (box + inner container) has been tested against ASTM D3475 or 16 CFR 1700.20 under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act — not the box alone.

That said, your outer box still has legal obligations: it must be opaque (required in at least nine states for most product types), carry the universal THC symbol, display THC mg labeling, include a batch/lot number, and meet your state’s “not attractive to minors” standard. Fourteen states explicitly bar packaging that mimics food products — no candy wrappers, no cartoon characters.

California runs two compliance tiers worth knowing: edibles must remain child-resistant for the product’s entire shelf life, while inhalables can lose child resistance after first opening — provided the label says so.

The box itself doesn’t carry the certification — the full packaging system does. Child resistance is tested at the container or closure level. Your outer box must be opaque and compliant with labeling rules, but “child-resistant” is a system-level rating, not a box feature.

Can a paper box be child-resistant on its own?
In most cases, no. A folding carton can be part of a tested child-resistant system, but paperboard alone doesn’t pass ASTM or CPSC testing. The inner closure or resealable pouch is what typically holds the certification.
