Christmas Ornament Boxes

Glass baubles and delicate decorations break easily, so they need good packaging. Christmas ornament boxes keep each piece protected in storage, shipping and on the shelf. Sellers and gift shops can add custom prints to make the ornaments look more valuable.

Custom Christmas Ornament Boxes

Purpose-Built Packaging for Fragile, Beautiful Ornaments — Not Just Another Holiday Box

Christmas ornament boxes are specialized packaging structures designed to hold, protect, and present glass, ceramic, resin, and blown-glass baubles safely, whether you're shipping a single keepsake or a 24-count wholesale set.

Unlike standard seasonal boxes, they're engineered around one non-negotiable reality: ornaments are fragile, often spherical, and they travel in groups. That means dividers, cavity sizing, and cushioning aren't optional upgrades — they're the whole point.

At Sire Printing, we build custom Christmas ornament boxes around your specific ornaments, not the other way around. Here's what you can expect across structures, sizes, and quantities.

What Are Custom Christmas Ornament Boxes?

Custom Christmas ornament boxes are made-to-spec packaging built specifically for ornament dimensions, fragility, and multi-piece presentation.

They differ from the broader custom christmas boxes category in one critical way: every structural decision — cavity depth, divider count, flute grade — exists to prevent a glass or ceramic ornament from cracking in transit or rattling against its neighbor on a retail shelf.

A generic gift box doesn't account for the ornament's hook clearance, its spherical shape, or the fact that it shares space with five or eleven others.

Box Structures Built Around Ornaments

The structure you choose depends on whether you're displaying on a retail shelf, shipping direct to a customer, or moving bulk inventory to a wholesale buyer.

Structure

Typical Use

Board

Notes

Window die-cut box

Retail shelf display

16–24pt SBS

PVC window patch shows ornament; great for POP display

Two-piece rigid with dividers

Premium/boutique single ornaments

2–3mm greyboard

Keepsake feel; magnetic closure option available

Egg-crate compartment tray

6, 12, or 24-count sets

Corrugated or SBS

Holds each ornament in its own cell; wholesale standard

Single-ornament gift box

Individual gifting, e-commerce

14–18pt SBS

Compact footprint; works for artisan sellers

Bulk storage/trade box

Stacked wholesale shipments

B-flute corrugated

No window; built for protection and stackability

For boutique brands wanting a retail-forward look, window die-cut ornament boxes are the go-to — the PVC window patch lets the ornament speak for itself.

For premium glass ornament lines or corporate holiday gifting, a sleeve-and-tray box or two-piece rigid with a magnetic closure gives that unboxing moment real weight.

Sizing & Dimensions

Getting the interior cavity right is where most ornament packaging goes wrong. Standard ball ornament diameters run at 60mm (2.36"), 70mm (2.75"), 80mm (3.15"), and 100mm (4"). Each size needs a different interior cavity — and you have to account for more than just the diameter.

Standard Sizing Reference

Ornament Diameter

Recommended Interior Cavity

Notes

60mm / 2.36"

~2.6" × 2.6" × 3.0"

Add 0.25"+ hook clearance above

70mm / 2.75"

~3.0" × 3.0" × 3.4"

Standard Christmas ball — most common

80mm / 3.15"

~3.4" × 3.4" × 3.8"

Larger retail display pieces

100mm / 4.0"

~4.3" × 4.3" × 4.8"

Oversized/feature ornaments

Elongated and finial ornaments — like teardrop or icicle shapes — need additional depth beyond what the diameter suggests. Always measure hook height separately and add that to the cavity depth, not just the body of the ornament.

How to Measure Your Ornament for a Custom Dieline

  1. Measure the widest diameter of the ornament body
  2. Measure from the bottom of the ornament to the top of the hook/loop
  3. Add a minimum 0.25" clearance on each side for cushioning
  4. Share those numbers with us — we build the dieline from there

Dividers & Inserts — Why They're Not Optional

This is where Christmas ornament packaging earns its job. When ornaments touch each other in a moving box — even a short courier journey — you get chipping, cracking, or shattered glass. The right divider system eliminates that contact entirely.

Three systems we use:

  • Cardboard egg-crate dividers — the most cost-effective solution for 6, 12, and 24-count sets. Interlocking cardboard strips form individual cells. Works well in corrugated ornament storage boxes for seasonal or wholesale use.
  • Foam inserts — cut to ornament shape, foam cradles each piece individually. Best for blown-glass baubles or ceramic ornaments where surface scratches matter as much as breakage.
  • Molded pulp trays — a sustainable insert option made from recycled fiber. Each ornament sits in a formed cavity. Popular with eco-positioned artisan brands.

For ornament boxes with dividers going into 12 or 24-count wholesale sets, egg-crate cardboard trays hit the right balance of protection and cost.

For premium single-ornament ornament gift boxes, foam or molded pulp gives the presentation a quality that matches what's inside. You can also find complementary display solutions in our Christmas display boxes range.

Who Orders Christmas Ornament Boxes

Artisan & Boutique Ornament Makers

Etsy sellers and independent studio brands typically need small runs of premium packaging that reflects the handcrafted quality of the product. A single-ornament rigid box with spot UV printing and a foam insert tells the customer they're holding something worth keeping. Custom Christmas ornament boxes at low MOQ make this accessible without overcommitting to inventory.

Gift Shops & Retail Boutiques

Retail requires shelf presence. Window die-cut ornament display boxes with strong seasonal print let the ornament do the visual work while your branding holds the shelf. E-flute corrugated gives enough rigidity for stacking without adding bulk.

Corporate Holiday Gifting Programs

Companies ordering branded multi-ornament sets — 6 or 12-count sets with company artwork — need consistent color across hundreds of boxes. Pantone-matched wholesale ornament boxes in rigid or corrugated formats handle large runs reliably. See our Christmas gift boxes for single-gift corporate formats.

Collectors & Seasonal Storage Market

Post-holiday use is an underserved angle in ornament packaging. Ornament storage boxes with labeled compartments and stackable corrugated construction give collectors a reason to keep the box long after December. This is a genuine purchase driver for collector-oriented brands — mention it in your copy and it becomes a selling point, not just packaging.

Materials & Finishes — Matched to the Ornament, Not Generic

SBS paperboard (16–24pt) works for window die-cut and single-ornament gift boxes. Its bright white surface takes full-color print cleanly, and it holds foil stamping and spot UV without issue. For premium glass ornament lines, gold or silver foil on SBS gives the box the same visual register as the product inside.

Rigid greyboard (2–3mm) is for premium two-piece boxes where the packaging is part of the gift. It doesn't flex, doesn't dent, and holds its corners through multiple openings — important for ornaments people store and display year after year.

Kraft board — natural or white — suits artisan and handmade ornament brands positioning around sustainability. It prints well in limited colors and pairs naturally with twine, labels, and minimal branding.

For fragile-item shipping, flute choice matters more than most people realize. E-flute is thin with a relatively smooth outer surface — good for retail mailers where print quality is a priority. B-flute is thicker and absorbs impact better, making it the right call for heavier ceramic ornaments or multi-piece sets traveling through standard carrier networks.

If your ornaments are going through ISTA transit testing requirements for retail compliance, B-flute corrugated with foam inserts is the combination that holds up.

Sustainable Ornament Packaging

FSC-certified kraft and corrugated are available across all our ornament box structures. Recyclable cardboard dividers replace foam where protection levels allow it.

For artisan and handmade sellers who market their products as eco-conscious, the packaging needs to match that story — molded pulp inserts and kraft wraps do that without compromising protection.
